Methodology Overview

The Constraints-Led Approach is about educating intention and attention and calibrating the fencer with the fencing environment and dynamic specifying information. Ecological information consists of things like perceiving time to contact, distance to contact, opponent’s intention and acting on affordances that emerge as a result.

A Constraints-Led Fencing Philosophy

The main idea behind the CLA comes from Karl Newell’s model of how the organism, task and environmental constraints interact to present affordances for adaptation.

Ecosystem

Performance emerges from the interaction of athlete, task, and environment. We then understand these relationships in the context of the essence of the game — awareness of intention, perception of distance and a feeling for tempo. In so doing, we develop skill, game-sense and technique all at the same time.
